Progress: Baby Shower gift completed

I’ve been lacking motivation. It is beautiful outside and after my horrible time trying to make the clay bowls I wasn’t feeling optimistic about my to do list.

A girlfriend had requested a mobile for her new baby. The first space ship themed one was actually what started my love affair with felt. Primitive I know but hey… :p

I wanted to do something similar to this sheep mobile but her Evernote had a couple of ideas for mobiles  and none were that one. She had this one and tons of variations of this one . So I found this tutorial and thought… I liked the shape of her clouds 🙂 I printed the clouds on both landscape and portrait… I opted to use the smaller cloud cause I wanted to make several but I used raindrops in both sizes.

A couple of weekends ago I got started on some cutting.

And boy did I cut. Apparently I was a little over eager on the amount of raindrops I would need cause I only ended up uses 18!

This is what I ended with:

Next time I wouldn’t  wrap the hoop with SMALL ribbon. I was cursing myself for only only thin and Christmas stuff. The only hoop I had that was the right size though was the bright pink one. I hope I pulled off the trying to make it look like this. lol

Things I did:

I used a machine to sew up the clouds but I left the rough edges, I thought it added to the cloud image. I also used 3 different types of white felt. I mixed and matched the fronts and backs. You can’t really tell on my iphone pics but it adds a bit in person.

I used similar coloured embroidery floss to attach the rain drops to the clouds.

I added a bit of fabric stiffner to each rain drop. Perhaps next time I would use two pieces and hand stitch them together with some stuffing.

Also, I had a horrible time keeping them untangled. wrapping it I just but each cloud in its own thing but untangling the six threads will be a little difficult.

I haven’t been able to give it to the mamma yet. Hopefully she likes it.

Happy belated Father’s Day

I had strep throat and that is my excuse for the late post.

So what do you get a dad who has everything? OR the things he needs, you can’t afford because you are an eternal grad student looking for work? Well my sister came up with this ideahttp://blog.bitsofeverything.com/2011/06/fathers-day-ideas.html

And we copied it here:

ta-da… definitely something different. It was actually a little hard finding some of the candies up here. If I was ever to do this again, I would sub out for some Canadian ones. Like SMARTIES instead of Airheads 🙂

Felt Camera Case

Is it only just me that get’s so behind on craft’s that I end up mailing them months after the event?

Last November my sister sent me this link

And asked if I could make her one for Christmas. I bought some felt and never got around to it. Well, I can partially blame her cause she never got back to me with the measurements of her point and shoot. :p

So suddenly it is May and she is about to leave on a pretty epic two week adventure so I thought I would throw it together this afternoon.

I’m envisioning pink and purple ones…. I also have this picture saved to my felt board

Throw it together really being the truth. My stitching was really, really off and I free handed the cutting but all in all, I think it will work for her. It was a good first go. The pictures are just taken with my phone and the dimensions look a little off because I was trying to keep the velcro pieces on the back from touching each other cause the fabric glue hadn’t dried yet.

Never underestimate the power of a balloon

St. Patrick’s Day!!!! I’m sneaking this blog post in using the default “within a calendar week of my last post”  After I finish I’m going to head to the kitchen to make these tasty looking mint chocolate chip cookies.

Though I want to tell you a story of what I’ve been up to.

There is the guy I want to be friends with. He is funny, into woodworking, always has the best Internet clips/pictures. Did I mention he makes awesome things out of wood?? AND owns a lot of tools. It happened a few weeks ago he was heading to Toronto and I asked if I could hitch a ride. On the way back, he didn’t take any gas money but suggested I bake him something.

SOLD! After all, most of my friends and family are overwhelmed with the treats I try to pawn off share with them. Knowing that he was heading away for a work trip I thought it would be awesome to leave a package of goodies at his door for when he got back in the wee hours of the night.

The goods:

Lemon Tartlets with Meringue Caps:  I’ve been wanting to make these forever. Though, they were a pretty big fail on my part. The meringue caps browned, I didn’t have the brioche dishes to form the crust into adorable little dishes. They ended up with weird shaped forms. The lemon curd was fine. Though I still included it in the package. Not put together but with instructions.

Snickerdoodle Blondies: I’ve fallen in love with tons of the recipes on The Brown Eyed Baker’s blog and is the inspiration behind my bucket list of food goods. These came out well enough, a little overdone. I have not mastered the art of squares.

Doughnuts:  I have wanted a mini doughnut pan forever but I finally gave up on my search and bough this pan. It comes with a basic recipe and directions on how to do powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar and chocolate glaze. So I threw in a few of those. They are yummy but next time I’m going to attempt these pumpkin ones.

Finally and what made the whole package was these peanut butter things.OMG! They were fantastic! The recipe also took up almost all of the cookie cutters I own.

I threw them in the freezer for a bit and WOW… these are the only pictures that came out from all of the baking. I really need to learn to take pictures with my camera and not my poor iphone 3G.

I felt a little creeper-ish leaving the whole package, including the wonderful truck balloon at his door at about 10pm but the next day, I woke up to this:

So. Finally made it home, after many delays, frustrations, and annoyances. After that, I was in a bit of a foul mood. So, imagine my surprise when I found, sitting on my front porch, a helium balloon attached to a big tupperware container full of raw sugar, in the form of ubertasty treats from the great baker, Cassandra Wilson! Thanks for brightening my day girl!

So yay for warm fuzzies!!!! Also look at the fantastic skull cookie cutter I got for Christmas from my sisters.

It turns out there was enough of the peanut butter stuff that I managed to have my own share and take a bunch to work. Though I did switch the recipe up a bit by using speckled candy melts. Mainly because that was what I had. I can’t wait to make these again.
